  • Illinois man charged with on-campus sexual assault reaches plea deal

    An Illinois man allegedly connected to an on-campus sexual assault in February pleaded guilty to reduced charges Friday in East Lansings 54-B District Court. Montague Stanford 40 of Naperville Ill. pleaded guilty to one count of indecent exposure a misdemeanor offense which carries a maximum charge of one year in jail andor a 1000 fine.

    A fire broke out Sunday night at the Trappers Cove apartment complex in Lansing displacing more than 80 people from their homes including many MSU students. Alison Bono a spokeswoman for the Mid-Michigan chapter of the American Red Cross said at least half of the residents living in the affected building are affiliated with MSU.

    Staff in the College of Education said a man attempted to steal a computer as a fire alarm sounded Saturday MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. The suspect allegedly came into the building during the alarm and attempted to steal a computer from the College of Education office.

    A 21-year-old female MSU student said her wristlet was stolen April 18 after she left her dorm room unlocked MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. She said the student left the wristlet on her dresser in her Holmes Hall room. She left the room unattended with the door open while she went downstairs for an hour.

In a statement Thursday Pratt said the department believes Weber made a bad choice by turning off the fire alarm after it initially rang but will not pursue charges.

  • SADD Day aims to deter drunken driving

    Spartans Against Drunk Driving or SADD hosted SADD Day on Tuesday in front of the rock on Farm Lane to raise awareness about SADD and the dangers of drinking and driving. Officers from the East Lansing Police Department and the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety and members of SADD passed out information cards and stickers to encourage students not to drink and drive.

    More than 1700 people participated in Relay for Life on Friday and Saturday at Ralph Young Field track walking for survivors of cancer those who have died of cancer and the caregivers who walked with them on their journey. The event raised 121000 for the American Cancer Society.

  • Fire engulfs East Lansing home at corner of Hillcrest Avenue, Elm Place

    A fire destroyed a two-story rental home Friday on the corner of Hillcrest Avenue and Elm Place where 11 people most of whom are MSU students lived. Firefighters were called to 318 Elm Place at 915 a.m. after a 911 call for a house fire East Lansing Fire Marshal Bob Pratt said. About a half dozen people were in the house when the fire started and all escaped without injury.

    MSU uses the Social Norms campaign to curb high-risk drinking. There are misconceptions on campus that the majority of students are drinking more than they actually are. However not everybody is drinking. MSU hopes to continue to educate students about the truths of drinking behavior.
